If You Need Help Picking the Right Exterior Threshold, Try Using Our Threshold Selection Guide

Exterior Door Threshold Selection Guide

The right exterior door threshold depends on more than the width of the doorway. Your door’s swing, the depth of the sill and the type of door-bottom seal all affect which profile will fit and seal properly. Start with the door assembly, then compare dimensions and any needed extenders before ordering.

Choose a Profile for Your Door

For a door that opens inward, compare adjustable inswing thresholds in 4 9/16″, 5 5/8″ and 7 13/16″ widths. Choose the width that covers your sill, and check that the adjustable cap can meet the door-bottom seal.

For a door that opens outward, look at the 5 5/8″ outswing threshold. Its profile and seal location need to match your door assembly.

For a low raised transition, consider a 1/4″ or 1/2″ saddle threshold. Check the floor level on both sides, the clearance beneath the door and the door-bottom seal. Saddle thresholds have fixed heights.

Measure Before You Order

Check three dimensions: width is the front-to-back depth of the sill, length runs across the doorway, and height is measured from the surface supporting the threshold. A threshold’s listed height does not necessarily equal the difference between the finished floor levels on either side.

Also check the space beneath the closed door and how its sweep or door-bottom seal will contact the threshold. An adjustable cap can help fine-tune that contact, but it cannot correct every floor-height difference.

When You Need a Threshold Extender

A compatible threshold extender adds front-to-back coverage when the frame or jamb is deeper than the threshold. Match the extender to the threshold’s exact brand, profile and width before choosing its size, length and finish. An extender does not raise the adjustable cap or make the threshold longer across the doorway.

For an HBP Endura 4 9/16″ inswing threshold, use a matching 4 9/16″ extender, available in 2″ and 3″ widths.

For an HBP Endura 5 5/8″ inswing threshold, use the matching 5 5/8″ extender family. Listed extender widths are 1 3/16″, 2″, 3″, 4 3/8″ and 6 3/8″. This family may also fit compatible 5 5/8″ outswing thresholds; check the outswing product page and confirm the connection profile before ordering.

The 4 9/16″ and 5 5/8″ extender families are not interchangeable. This guide does not list a matching extender for a 7 13/16″ threshold or an aluminum saddle threshold. For those openings, select a threshold with the coverage you need.

Final Checks

Confirm the door swing, measure the sill and opening, and check the finished floor levels and door-bottom seal. Inswing and outswing thresholds are supplied uncut for fitting, and saddle thresholds can be shortened. Follow the threshold and door manufacturers’ instructions for support, sealing and installation.
